Minnesota depends on the nurses, orderlies, radiation technologists, clerks, cleaners, physicians and many others who keep the state's hospitals running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Hospitals ensure that the needed staff members are on hand to help meet the public's critical care needs. With 100,000 hospital employees statewide, it is a challenging task. And demographic factors make it more complex - an aging population is driving up demand at the same time retirements are increasing. Hospitals are working hard both on their own and through MHA to address work force concerns.
The Physician Work-Force Shortage: A Minnesota Perspective Recent studies on physician supply and demand report diverse predictions, and it is important to know and understand the facts. As a benefit to members, MHA Workforce Development has authored a white paper that discusses the impact of a diminishing physician supply on access to quality care in Minnesota hospitals, factors affecting supply and demand, rural versus urban issues and more. Information and insights from a local perspective will set the stage for future discussion, education and research, and begin the process of identifying potential solutions for physician recruitment and retention: [PDF].
